Witch Hunters

So, I have decided that I have too much Malifaux stuff.  And that too much of that Malifaux stuff is unpainted.  And that I don't know what I have got.  So, in order to fix this, I have begun the great Malifaux Painting Plan (C).

The idea is, that I am going to complete Malifaux in Waves.  Starting with Wave 1, I will paint all of the models within each book, to at least a tabletop standard.  This will mean that, eventually, my goal of having everything for all Factions will be achieved, at some point in the distant past.

So I have made a list.  It is based on all of the Wave 1 Arsenal boxes (Except Gremlins.  I can't find the gremlins one, and have lent a new player my Rulebook).  I plan to work my way down it, painting everything, and magnetising the bases to stick it to trays for ease of display and movement.

To get me started, I have waded in on some of the Guild boxes I had unbuilt.  Starting with The Torch and Blade, Sonia Criid's crew box.

On the grounds of full disclosure, I really didn't enjoy some of this.  The undercoat was done badly and made painting a chore.  The eternal flame has broken several times at the ludicrous hip joints, and is now at the stage where the fix is "looks good enough" rather than "looks good".  I need to think about changing the Flames on Sonia's sword, and there are a few other bits that should probably get done.  But, overall, they are good enough for tabletop, and these were never going to be my favourite crew.  I do look forward to trying them against some Arcanists soon, though.

Swamp Thing.....You make my heart sing...

This weekend saw me run my first full, 50SS Malifaux tournament at LVL Up.  12 Players travelled from a number of local towns to play three rounds of Malifaux, and a good time was had by all.  I will post more about this, including the results, in another post.

Inspired by the Tournament, I have also finished painting the models that I needed for my Zoraida crew box.  This was slightly hampered by the fact that they are also from the "assembling everything really quickly and badly" phase, and I have lost the sprue with all of Zoraida's voodoo dolls on it.  However, I think that the crew, now finalised looks Ok.

These aren't paint-jobs that are going to set the world on fire, but they add another Master to my Neverborn.  I only have one Master left to paint for them, and that is Lucius.  Whether I paint him now, in metal, or wait until I get the plastic box set, we shall see.

In the meantime, the entire box together.

Swamped with Painting

So, I have been working on the pile of models that I built during a spell when I decided that building loads of Malifaux models badly was a good idea.  I've learned my lesson on that one, and now build the models with (a little) more care.  I started with some Silurids.  They were put together really badly.  In reverse order, I have painted Bad Juju as the second of the projects this post.

This was a quick and easy paint job, a simple Base/Drybrush/Wash with some details then added in, on one of my standard Swamp bases.  I don't think that it is going to see a lot of table time, but as a completist, I wanted to get it done.

Before I started on Bad Juju, I painted the Silurids.  These were also shockingly badly assembled and took a bit of clean up to get them even to this point.  That said, they look reasonably good at a tabletop distance.  The only real point of note in their paint job is that the eyes were done with the new Spiritstone Red over silver.  I like the effect.

Next, I shall work on Zoraida and the Voodoo Doll.  Unfortunately, in assembling Zoraida, I have mislaid the Voodoo Dolls that are supposed to be part of the model.  I am sure that they will turn up, but until then, I shall paint her without.

In other news, I have the first Malifaux tournament I am running as a Henchman on Saturday.  We have filled 16 places with people who have said they are coming, and I am hoping it will be a good day, although I suspect I will learn a number of lessons.

Oh, and Cat.  Or rather, Kitten.  I have one, with all of the fear that this brings regarding the safety of my models going forward!

Go on, have a 'Stroke

Deathstroke that is.  Continuing on the theme of assassins that was started with Deadpool, I give you, Deathstroke.  Nothing much to say about this, painted as a commission for Marcus, who then moved away for a bit, leaving it languishing on the painting table.  He is back, and so I cracked on and finished this.

I suspect that the photo doesn't do the black justice.  In any event, I used a new method for painting the black, which I am happy with in person, and so I am going to share, if for no other reason than to record it for my later review.

Step 1 - Paint everything black.  Simple, but obvious
Step 2 - Coat everything with a pot of old Citadel Black Ink.  It gives a fine, deeeeep black to work from
Step 3 - Drybrush the black with Incubi Darkness
Step 4 - Drybrush with Hellion Green.  VERY lightly
Step 5 - Wash with Nuln Oil.

I think I like this considerably more than most of my other techniques for black.

Painting to Win

So, I have continued in my stores league, having played a single game of Age of Sigmar.  I played against an Ironjaws army, and the lesson learned is that Orc magic is really destructive.  I like the game.  I used to play a lot of Warhammer Fantasy, and while this is a different game, I wouldn't say it is worse.  Its likely to become my "quick and fun" game.

I've proceeded with the painting, and have now got to the point where I have a 1000pts painted, with a few extra, and am heading towards my 1500.  As well as the liberators and Retributors painted before, I have added the following.

Lord Relictor

Lord Celestant on Dracoth

Lord Celestant on Dracoth
Lord Celestant on Dracoth
Prosecutors

Prosecutors

Justicators

Justicators
I still have a Knight Azyros to paint (Built) and then I can add another Lord, and another unit of Justicators, and that will give me 2 Battalions.  I can then add some more paladins to make a 2000pt force and stop.

On Monday, I also played my first game of Warmachine in years, and certainly the first since Mk3.  This was only a battle box sized game, but it was enough fun for me to decide that I am probably going to start playing this more regularly.  I have a huge Cygnar force already, which can be expanded, and the startings of a Trollbloods force, so not too much work to stick with the only playing with painted models rule.
